Provision of a clinic for the Hawaii community

Following the 2007-8 disturbances, several displacement camps were established in the Eldoret area, including the Kimumu Ward where the Hawaii estate is located.

At about the same time, the local private 3-bed clinic/dispensary (occupying a corrugated iron shack) closed down. This left the population of Hawaii estate (approx. 10,000 people excluding the remnants still in the remains of the displacement camps) without ready access to even elementary health care and advice.

This means that sick people from the Hawaii estate now have to travel some 3-4 miles (on foot or using the risky minibuses) into Eldoret to receive basic health care and purchase medication. This situation is repeated for the other estates situated in the Kimumu Ward. Effectively 50,000 people are without ready access to primary care.

Step-Changers is seeking to promote the provision of a purpose-built clinic/dispensary in this area.

Mosquito nets in Mozambique

Step-changers has contributed to the provision of mosquito nets in rural Mozambique. We will continue to do so with gifts designated for this purpose.

Casa Ruxandra – Botosani, Romania

This is a small group home for orphaned children, some with special health and educational needs. The work of this home complies with Step-Changer’s objects, and designated gifts are directed to support this home. Step-Changers International has also given advice relating to the future oversight and legal standing of this home.

Supporting teachers in Kigali, Rwanda

Previously, Step-Changers contributed designated gifts to two teachers working in a school in Kigali, Rwanda for 12 months. However, it became evident that the school was not primarily serving the needs of the local community, so did not comply with the objects of Step-Changers, so this support has ended.
